Portrait of a gentleman, an oil on canvas painting from the 19th century Valencia school, Spain, 30 × 22 cm, signed, sold with a period frame.
Description from the seller
Valencian School, 19th century
Portrait of a gentleman, circa late 19th century
Oil on canvas
An interesting half-length masculine portrait, depicting a bearded gentleman, elegantly dressed in a dark suit, white shirt, and tie, in a relaxed pose with an elevated gaze, which gives the composition a markedly introspective and psychological character.
The work stands out for the adept treatment of the face, with particular attention to the fleshy modeling, the serene expression, and the careful execution of the beard and hair, resolved through a loose yet controlled brushstroke. The neutral background, in brownish and grayish tones, reinforces the figure and complies with the academic canons typical of the nineteenth-century bourgeois portrait.
It bears a signature in the lower right corner, executed in red, pending final study, as well as a handwritten inscription on the reverse that documents the commissioned nature of the work and its dating, providing notable historical and documentary interest.
A work that fits within the portrait tradition of the Valencian school of the 19th century, linked to academic realism and to private-commission painting. It is preserved with a period frame, in keeping with the overall ensemble.
