Biography
Franz Erhard Walther (born 1939 in Fulda) is a German artist and one of the most influential representatives of conceptual and participatory art internationally. He lives and works in Germany. Since the 1960s, Walther has developed a radically expanded understanding of art, in which body, action, time, and space take on central importance.
Walther became internationally known for his 'works,' textile objects and fabric elements that only become artworks through the active participation of viewers. His works shift the boundaries between sculpture and performance, emphasizing the process of action over the static object. As a result, Walther is considered a pioneer of an art form that redefines the relationship between the artwork, the artist, and the audience.
Franz Erhard Walther participated in major international exhibitions, including multiple appearances at documenta, and was awarded prestigious prizes, including the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale. His works are part of leading museum and private collections worldwide and have significantly influenced the development of conceptual, performative, and relational art.
