Description from the seller
Anton Martineau (1926-2017)
He lived in Amsterdam and studied at the Royal Academy of Art (The Hague) and the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten (Amsterdam). Anton Martineau is an artist of international standing. He exhibited with Saura and Tapies at the Stadler Gallery in Paris in 1967. Along with his friend Jan Sierhuis, he belonged to a slightly younger generation than the Cobra painters. His oeuvre consists of paintings, drawings, and prints in a strongly expressionist figurative style. Spontaneous drawing plays a significant role in his work.
Subjects are primarily: humans, dancing couples, tango, eroticism, the drama of love and death, joy and fear, absurd portraits, and still lifes. His lyrical style was sometimes classified as part of the international new figuration but also shows affinities with the expressionism of Cobra and Lucebert. He was therefore friends with Karel Appel, Corneille, and poet Gerrit Kouwenaar. Due to his desire to follow a completely individual path, he did not seek close ties with Cobra. However, the development of his work in the mid-1960s coincided with the zeitgeist of the Provo movement and the sexual revolution. The pleasure Martineau derives from painting and working with oil paint may be evident from his comparison of the sensual experience of squeezing a tube of paint to an orgasm, ... even though the actual work has yet to begin.
