Jitte 十手（じって）
This is a traditional Japanese jitte, a restraining weapon used by officials such as yoriki, dōshin, and their assistants known as okappiki
Unlike bladed weapons, the jitte was designed to subdue and arrest suspects without killing, reflecting the law enforcement practices of early modern Japan
Forged from iron, the jitte features a characteristic side hook near the grip, used to catch, block, or even break an opponent’s sword
The handle is wrapped in ray skin, providing a secure, non-slip grip and demonstrating the practical craftsmanship of the period
Produced by skilled metalworkers who employed techniques similar to those used by swordsmiths, this piece represents an example of policing equipment
