Jan van den Abbeel (born June 16, 1943 in Denderbelle, Belgium – died February 12, 2018 in Ghent) was a Belgian modernist artist who is best known for his work within Op Art and neoconstructivism.
He studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent (1959–1964) and later also worked as a lecturer in graphic design at the same academy.
Around 1965 he broke away from figuration and evolved toward geometric abstraction, in which he was strongly influenced by constructive principles and optical effects.
In 1966 he, together with Willy Plompen and Yves De Smet, founded the PLUS-group, which sought a new relationship between art and living space.
His work is characterized by precise geometric compositions, contrasting colors, and a focus on rhythm and visual dynamism.
From the 1980s, he also turned to photography, in which his structural and geometric approach persisted.
Van den Abbeel received various awards, including the Prize for Young Belgian Painting (1969), and his work is part of important collections such as S.M.A.K. Ghent, Mu.ZEE Ostend, and the Dhondt-Dhaenens Museum.
