Description from the seller
War Manuals – Bertolt Brecht (1955)
Overview
Kriegsfibel (translated as War Manual) is a book by the German playwright and poet Bertolt Brecht, first published in 1955 by Eulenspiegel Verlag in East Berlin. The work is a collection of war photographs — many taken from newspapers — accompanied by Brecht's short four-line poems (epigrams). These combinations create a powerful commentary on the brutality, the absurdity, and the human cost of war.
Content and Objective
Brecht began compiling the material during World War II while he was in exile. The photographs are often blunt and documentary in nature, showing soldiers, civilians, destruction and propaganda. Each image is accompanied by a concise, ironic, or bitterly critical verse, designed to provoke thought and challenge official narratives.
The Kriegsfibel is not only a historical narrative, but also a political work of art, using the juxtaposition of image and text to expose the contradictions and tragedies of war. It reflects Brecht's Marxist perspective and his belief in art as a tool of social critique.
Context
Historical The book was published in the postwar period in East Germany, where Brecht had settled after his return from exile. It remains an important example of photo-literature and is studied both for its artistic innovation and its political message
