Shu Takahashi
Born in Shin-ichi-cho, Hiroshima, in 1930.
He has been living and working in Rome since 1963, and since 1966, he has been a lecturer at the University of Sciences and Arts of Kurashiki.
Due to the war, he interrupted his studies in 1944, resuming them in 1950 when he enrolled at the Musashino School of Art in Tokyo. To support himself, he took on humble jobs and left the school.
It will be Kotaro Midorikawa who will call him to reintroduce him into the environment, at an exhibition organized by the avant-garde association Dokuritsu Bijutsu, where he is a painting master.
He forms the Gruppo Nouveau in his country with other artists, aiming to revolutionize the visual language.
In 1956, his first solo exhibition took place in Tokyo at the Maruzen Gallery; he studied with painter Morisuke Komoda and engraver Tetsuro Komai.
He received the Dokuritsu Prize, and his 'Road of the Moon' was acquired by the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo, which awarded the work the Yasui Prize for young artists (1961).
With a scholarship, she attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome (1963).
His is a spiritual abstraction, with vivid colors that refer to Eastern philosophical traditions. 'I have rediscovered the ancient Japanese art of Rinpa, which I believe, in its solemnity and splendor, is the first original artistic expression in the history of Japanese art,' he explains.
In 1966, he staged his first solo exhibition at the Galleria del Cavallino in Venice and exhibited some works at Fukuyama (Tenmaya Gallery).
In 1968, he was present at various screenings in the country.
He makes himself known in Italy and has maintained a continuous relationship with the Galleria dell’Ariete in Milan since 1969.
Giulio Carlo Argan, in 1971, wrote: 'The secret of Takahashi's refined coloristic pairings lies in the fact that the different qualities cannot combine but only modulate each other through the drawing of their boundaries, that is, by composing themselves as formal, plastic entities.'
After returning to Japan in 1970, he/she goes back to Rome.
He participated in the 1976 Venice Biennale, the 1977 Roman Quadriennale, and his intense artistic commitment of the 1970s also includes two monumental decorations (enamel and mixed media on canvas) on the exterior of the medieval Baptistery of Volterra (later exhibited at the Tyler School in Rome), as well as the mural painting for Banca Taiko Sogo in Yokohama.
The 1980 season opens with a solo exhibition at Galleria Editalia (now Edieuropa) in Rome, presented by Nello Ponente.
After moving to the countryside, near Ardea, the artist often returns to Japan for exhibitions or to attend to significant commissions (murals in the meeting room of the Museum of Craftsmanship in Kumamoto; large sculptures in public squares, such as Departure Towards the Future in Tokyo, The Arch of Love in Fukuyama, 1988, and Ascension in his hometown, 1992).
Among the exhibitions, the retrospective at GNAM in Rome (1993) and the 2003-2004 review at the Edoardo Chiossone Museum of Oriental Art in Genoa are noteworthy.
