Description from the seller
Item Description
This is a magnificent natural viewing stone (suiseki) from the Ibi River, designated with the poetic name "Yarigatake" (Spear Peak). Discovered in its natural state, this exceptional stone captures the essence of Japan's most iconic alpine scenery.
The Ibi River flows through Gifu Prefecture, one of Japan's most celebrated sources for suiseki collecting. Stones from this region are highly prized for their distinctive character, dramatic forms, and exceptional natural beauty that has formed over millennia through geological processes and river erosion.
This particular stone embodies the spirit of Yarigatake (Mount Yari), one of Japan's most famous mountains in the Northern Japanese Alps. The stone's dramatic vertical formation and angular peaks mirror the majestic silhouette of this legendary mountain, which stands at 3,180 meters and is often called the "Matterhorn of Japan."
The stone displays natural coloration and texture characteristic of authentic Ibi River specimens. Its untouched surface preserves the original patina developed through centuries of natural weathering. The form demonstrates the powerful forces of nature, with sharp ridges and dynamic contours that evoke the grandeur of mountainous terrain.
In the tradition of suiseki appreciation, this stone represents the mountain landscape category, one of the most valued classifications in Japanese viewing stone culture. Such stones have been treasured by collectors and artists for centuries as objects of contemplation, bringing the beauty of nature into indoor spaces.
This piece would be displayed on a traditional wooden base (daiza) for proper appreciation, though the base is not included. The substantial weight and impressive size make this a commanding presence suitable for serious collectors of suiseki or enthusiasts of traditional Japanese art forms.
