Description from the seller
This is an elegant Japanese hanging scroll depicting a peacock and peonies, executed in hand-painted color on silk. The work is signed Kōho (香圃) and represents a traditional kachō-ga (bird-and-flower painting) theme, long appreciated for both its decorative beauty and symbolic meaning.
The peacock is rendered with fine, layered brushwork and soft coloration, while the blooming peonies symbolize wealth, honor, and prosperity, making this composition a classic auspicious subject (kitchō-ga) in East Asian art. The balanced arrangement and rich yet restrained pigments give the work a refined and dignified presence.
The scroll is mounted in traditional form with bone rollers, and comes with its original storage box, suitable for safe preservation. The silk ground enhances the clarity of the brush lines and the depth of the colors.
Paintings of this type were commonly displayed in the tokonoma as symbols of good fortune and seasonal beauty. A fine example of traditional Japanese flower-and-bird painting, ideal for collectors of Japanese art and hanging scrolls.
