Description from the seller
Joan Barbarà (1927-2013). Engraving
Vertical-format work in which space is structured by a horizontal line that divides two contrasted parts: an upper, dark area with a white rectangle, and a lower white area on which a still life is discernible. The motifs gain volume through lights and shadows that erase the linearity of the preparatory drawing. Furthermore, the artist plays with organic textures and materials, such as striped painting and the effect of etching.
Beginning in painting and printmaking alongside Édouard Chimot and later with F. Melich, Joan Barbarà had the opportunity to work in printmaking in several workshops in Paris. Upon returning to Barcelona, he founded his own workshop which, little by little, came to be consolidated as one of the most prestigious within the postwar Catalan avant-garde.
Many renowned artists (Matisse, Picasso, Miró, Saura, Chillida, Cuixart or Tàpies) and galleries such as Maeght placed their trust in him.
