Marc Chagall also created here a fairy-tale world full of cheerfulness and joie de vivre, which merges reality and imagination into a new harmony. The colorful bouquet of flowers at the center of the painting symbolizes love, tenderness, and security that the couple visible on the left edge of the painting feels for each other.
In the foreground of the image, bathed in warm light from the Mediterranean sun, a donkey has settled down—Chagall's symbol of the creature as the patient helper of humankind.
