Description from the seller
Oil painting on canvas by a Dutch painter (unfortunately I can't read it) 1922. As described on the back, it depicts an old Carthusian monastery and was owned by a person from Utrecht in the Netherlands.
Oud Klooster / Chartreuse: "Oud Klooster" (Old Monastery) and "Chartreuse" refer to a specific Carthusian monastery, of which there are several historic sites in the Netherlands, Belgium and France. A Carthusian monastery is a monastery of the Carthusian Order. The designation Kartause derives from the Latin Cartusia for the founding site of the first Carthusian monastery, the mother house La Grande Chartreuse, which was established in 1084. A monastery is also located in Utrecht.
Since 1979, a museum of religious art has been housed in the former Catharijneconvent monastery in Utrecht. The history of the monastery goes back to the 12th century, when the monastery was dedicated to Catherine of Alexandria.
The painting is in good condition. The size with frame is 58 x 67 cm. Without frame 50.5 x 60 cm. The carved gold-colored frame from the period is included as a gift. The painting is signed in the lower left and dated 1922.
