Zao Wou-Ki (1921-2013)
Here we have an original screen print by French/Chinese artist Zao Wou-ki. This piece was created in 1973 initialled and inscribed 'EA' in pencil, one of fifty signed artist's proof impressions, aside from the unsigned edition of 250, on wove paper.
Biography:
He was a Chinese-French abstract painter renowned for merging traditional Chinese calligraphy and landscape painting with Western modernism, particularly Abstract Expressionism, creating a unique, lyrical style that earned him international acclaim as a key figure in the School of Paris. He studied in Hangzhou, moved to Paris in 1948, and became a French citizen, developing his signature style through influences from Picasso, Matisse, Cézanne, and Paul Klee, blending Eastern brushwork with Western abstract forms. His work explores light, space, and movement, bridging two cultures and making him a pivotal artist of 20th Century abstraction.
