Spanish contemporary sculptor, painter and poet. Miquel Navarro was born in 1945 in Valencia, the city where he has always lived and still has a studio in the Morería neighborhood.
The artist trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Carlos in Valencia. In his work, he draws on a range of influences—from postmodernism to minimalism—and a declared passion for the works of Julio González, Joseph Beuys, and Giorgio de Chirico.
Marks that are reflected in their most monumental form in their notable public art, with striking monuments in iconic locations across many cities such as Valencia, Castellón, Bilbao, Vitoria, Madrid, Brussels, or Murcia.
Thus his/her first significant exhibition took place in New York in 1980.
Soon afterward, frequent appearances at events and exhibitions in Paris, Berlin, California, Mexico, or Florence.
But at the end of the decade, he begins to work in theatrical scenography, where he also gains international recognition.
Public and peer recognition culminated in 2008, with election to the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando.
Taking the place left vacant by the passing of Juan de Ávalos.
His works also appear in two Pedro Almodóvar films, Carne Trémula and Julieta, a tribute by the filmmaker to one of the leading figures of Spanish contemporary art, being among the few Spanish artists, for example, to join UNESCO's famous art collection, alongside Picasso, Chillida, Miró and Tàpies. His legacy will be managed and promoted by the newly created Fundación Miquel Navarro, sponsored by the Government of the Valencian Province, which includes a Museum-Workshop.
