Description from the seller
Playful original screenprint by Daniel Spoerri (1930–), part of the iconic Art Zanders 1980 edition. Printed on thick Ikonofix matt colour paper with die-cut elements, offering a layered visual effect. A striking example of Spoerri’s witty conceptual approach.
This work showcases Spoerri’s characteristic fusion of visual poetry, humour, and conceptual experimentation. Known for pioneering the genre of “Eat Art” and his assemblage-based tableaux pièges, Spoerri here explores printmaking with a lively, surreal composition.
The print features five gymnasts or acrobats climbing and balancing on poles against a vividly coloured landscape. Printed in monochrome black linework on a backdrop of saturated pastel colours—pink, blue, green, and yellow—the work plays with visual layering through die-cut elements. Portions of the print can be lifted to reveal hidden layers beneath, enhancing the artwork’s playful and interactive quality.
This piece is executed on high-quality Ikonofix matt colour paper (170 g/m²), with sheets cut according to the original design and glued in place, creating a dimensional collage effect. The palette includes rosewood, brown, light blue, and light green tones. The piece is signed in the plate “Daniel Spoerri 80”.
Daniel Spoerri (b.1930) is a seminal figure in post-war European avant-garde art. Closely associated with the Nouveau Réalisme movement, he collaborated with artists such as Jean Tinguely, Yves Klein, Arman, and Niki de Saint Phalle. His practice intersects Fluxus, Dada, and conceptual art, and he has exhibited internationally, including at the MoMA (New York), Centre Pompidou (Paris), and Moderna Museet (Stockholm).
Spoerri’s work connects with that of other key figures in 20th-century art, such as Marcel Duchamp, Joseph Beuys, Dieter Roth, Robert Filliou, Ben Vautier, and George Brecht, sharing affinities with both the Dada and Fluxus traditions. His exploration of chance, objects, and everyday aesthetics places him alongside artists like Kurt Schwitters, Man Ray, and Meret Oppenheim.
