Konstantinos Grammatopoulos’s Mithymna III (Lesbos) is a limited edition colour lithograph (34/240) from 1978 on archival FABRIANO paper, measuring 86 × 58.5 cm, hand-signed in Greek with the year 1978, in very good condition.
Description from the seller
I present a distinguished work of Greek modernism—a large-format color lithograph by Konstantinos Grammatopoulos, professor at the Athens School of Fine Arts and one of the most important graphic artists of the 20th century. The work comes from a celebrated Aegean cycle, an analytical study of the light and architecture of the island of Lesbos.
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS & PROOF OF AUTHENTICITY:
Artist: Konstantinos Grammatopoulos (1916–2003).
Title: "Mithymna III (Lesbos)"
Medium: Original color lithograph (pencil style) – each color layer is applied from a separate lithographic stone.
Substrate: archival FABRIANO paper; a full, untrimmed sheet with the factory edges preserved.
Dimensions: 86 x 58.5 cm (Statement scale).
Signature: A handwritten pencil signature in Greek and the date (1978) in the lower right corner.
Edition: Limited edition 34/240.
EXPERT'S CORNER – WORKSHOP DETAILS: What distinguishes this specimen on the auction market is the preserved printer's registration marks (color registration marks) on the margins – a rare proof that the sheet was never trimmed or subjected to invasive bookbinding procedures. In close-up, the natural granularity of the lithographic stone is clearly visible, which rules out mechanical reproductions and confirms the status of a workshop piece.
CONDITION & PROVENANCE: Condition very good (vintage). On the margins, a noble patina and a delicate oxidation of the paper (acid burn) visible, typical for the original Fabriano sheets from the 1970s, constituting an additional element authenticating the age of the object. The item comes from my private collection.
Strategic note for pricing
Grammatopoulos' works from the Mithymna series are the subject of intense circulation on professional Greek and international markets. The dimensions 86 x 58 cm and the status of a professor at the Athens School of Fine Arts position this lithograph as "Investment Grade" for collectors of modernism.
“Every careful gaze at reality instantly exposes the mechanism of deceit” – in the case of this work, every microsecond of analysis under the lens confirms the authenticity of Grammatopoulos's masterful stroke.
The graphic will be sent in a special protective shipping tube, as an insured shipment with tracking.
