Description from the seller
On/Off Brass Industrial Light Switch with Maker’s Mark, 1940s
This on/off industrial light switch is a heavy-duty electrical conduit fitting produced for factory and utility installations. The front section is made of solid brass, fitted with original brass screws and a rotary toggle mechanism. The rear housing is executed in cast metal, reflecting robust industrial construction of the period.
Manufacturer and origin
The brass housing bears a stamped maker’s mark reading “A emblem M”. British industrial manufacture.
Date
Circa 1940s.
Style and use
Industrial on/off electrical conduit light switch. Operated by a half-turn rotary mechanism to switch between on and off positions. Designed for surface-mounted electrical systems, with a conduit entry point on the side. Retains original internal ceramic components, consistent with mid-20th-century electrical fittings.
Condition
Structurally complete and intact. Brass front plate shows surface wear, light scratches, and natural patina consistent with age and use. Cast metal rear housing remains solid with aged surface. Original screws, rotary toggle, and ceramic internal components are present. No modern replacement parts observed.
Value justification
Mid-20th-century industrial light switches are valued for their functional design, material quality, and association with historic industrial and maritime environments. The presence of an original stamped maker’s mark, combined with brass and ceramic construction, supports authenticity and enhances appeal as an industrial or maritime decor object.
Production context
Manufactured during a period when British industrial electrical fittings prioritised durability, heat resistance, and mechanical reliability. Brass and ceramic components were standard materials for long-term use in demanding working environments.
