Description from the seller
This is an oil painting by Willem Imandt, depicting Cape Town.
Dimensions: 41 x 50 cm
Dimensions with frame: 50 x 60 cm
In 1916, Imandt resigned from colonial service; until his retirement in 1929, at the age of 47, he worked as a head teacher and art teacher within Catholic education in the Dutch East Indies. Upon returning to Europe in 1929, art dealer Bos organized a large-scale solo exhibition that lasted four months and sold many works. Imandt then settled with his family in Sint-Gillis-Waas, close to his birthplace in Belgium, where he took a spacious house with an atelier that he named Insulinde. He returned as a prosperous man from the Dutch East Indies, where he had become one of the most well-known Western painters. In 1954, at the age of 72, Imandt had a retrospective exhibition in the halls of Hoogovens.
