Japanese Hanging Scroll “Hibo Kannon” (Compassionate Mother Kannon) – Artist Unknown
This is a Japanese hanging scroll (kakejiku) depicting Hibo Kannon (Compassionate Mother Kannon), after the famous composition by Kano Hogai (1828–1888), an important artist bridging the late Edo and early Meiji periods.
The artwork portrays Kannon Bosatsu standing gracefully upon clouds, embodying mercy and serenity. Below, a child appears within a luminous sphere, symbolizing maternal compassion and spiritual protection. This moving composition is widely regarded as one of the most iconic devotional images in Japanese art.
Please note: There is a visible tear at the lower part of the scroll.
Despite this damage, the piece retains its spiritual presence and visual beauty.
