Born and raised in Japan, Yoshikawa first studied English literature in Tokyo and in 1958 transferred to the University of Tsukuba for her master's degree in architecture and product design. In 1961, she moved to Germany and began her studies at the renowned Hochschule für Gestaltung Ulm as the only woman and one of the few students from Japan. Two years later, she moved to Zurich and worked in the studio of Swiss designer Josef Müller-Brockmann, whom she married in 1967. From 1970 onwards, she started her independent artistic career and turned to concrete art, enriching its geometric rigor with Eastern poetry and aesthetics.
