La contessa, a 19th‑century Italian oil on panel painting attributed to the Italian School, Realism, measuring 31 × 23 cm, sold with its original frame.
Description from the seller
A refined aristocratic female portrait dating to the 19th century, depicting an Italian countess, executed in oil on panel in the manner of 19th-century figurative painting.
The composition, set in an elegant profile, expresses great formal nobility and sober monumentality. The figure is depicted with an updo, a pearl necklace, and dangling earrings, elements that emphasize social rank and the era's taste. The dark dress is enhanced by a cloak in violet tones, which creates a refined color contrast and adds depth to the whole.
The brushwork is fine and controlled, with careful rendering of the complexion, of the shading, and of the volumes of the face. The sideways gaze conveys dignity, introspection, and decisive character—qualities typical of nineteenth-century aristocratic portraiture.
Particularly interesting is the presence of a heraldic emblem in the upper corner, probably a reference to the noble house, which adds an additional level of historical and symbolic value to the work.
The original period frame, finely crafted, completes the painting and enhances its charm and authenticity.
