Biography:
Winfred Gaul (1928–2003) was a significant German painter whose work reflects the shift from post-war Informel to analytical painting. Born in Düsseldorf, he studied under Willi Baumeister in Stuttgart, among others. In the 1950s, he was a key figure in Informel and a member of the "Gruppe 53." In the early 1960s, he made a radical stylistic change to geometric and color-field-dominated series like "Verkehrszeichen und Signale" (Traffic Signs and Signals) and "Farbmarkierungen" (Color Markings). Gaul participated in documenta II (1959) and documenta 6 (1977) and also worked as a lecturer.
