Artist biography
Francesc Sillué was born in the Sants district of Barcelona on February 24, 1936; his father, Manuel Sillué Roca, emigrated, like many other young Catalan farmers, to the capital of Catalonia to seek his fortune in industry.
He has no memory of when he began drawing; for him, his glyphs were a communicative language, and undoubtedly the best way to feel inwardly represented.
Once she had completed her schooling, she worked in several industrial engraving workshops, while in her spare time she attended the School of Arts and Crafts, and later pursued some courses at the School of Fine Arts. The artisanal experience she gained in the engraving workshops where she was employed would prove very useful in her artistic practice.
The well-known cartoonist Josep Narro was the one who, with his conversations at the drafting table, most influenced Sillué to decide to break with the routine of a job that could only give him security, to throw himself into the uncertainty of his own creative powers.
In 1959 he moved to Paris where he began his bohemian period; in 1961 he joined the group called "New Values", which was formed by the art critic Menéndez Virilio. Here he began his professional career as an artist, exhibiting in several French galleries.
In 1964, after giving two exhibitions in the United States, he met a young Norwegian woman who was studying in Paris, with whom he married. Between 1965 and 1969 he resided with his new family in Bergen, Norway, and Uppsala, the most important cultural center in Sweden.
The impetus for change took him to London, where he discovered street markets and established an excellent relationship with a well-known gallerist, exhibiting at the Great House Gallery in Manchester and at the Seen Gallery in London.
The first exhibition in Barcelona was in 1982, at Art Gallery. Sillué then alternated his exhibitions in London, Norway, and Catalonia, although shortly thereafter he moved his residence to Sitges. It was a return to Catalan roots, but through a cosmopolitan place, open to tourism and also to the sea. His current studio, located opposite the San Sebastián beach, is tranquil for many months of the year, but at the same time it feeds the restlessness of long journeys.
Francesc Sillué has reached the level of expressive maturity that, for a painter like him who has known very diverse environments and is familiar with different cultures, allows him to make a fruitful synthesis between what is thought and what is lived. His personal experience enables him to be increasingly freer, for his entire career has helped him to find the truth of what he already carried inside when he embarked on the journey.
