Description from the seller
Émile LAMMERS (1914–1990)
Ruelle
Oil on canvas, signed at the bottom left.
The canvas measures 92 cm by 72 cm.
With the frame measuring 116 cm by 96 cm.
This composition depicts a narrow alley lined with old houses, typical of a European urban fabric. The scene is structured by a vanishing perspective that guides the eye toward the sunlit end of the street, creating a striking contrast with the darker façades in the foreground.
The warm palette, dominated by ochre, brown, and terracotta tones, is animated by touches of light applied with a generous material. The pavement, treated in impasto, appears slightly damp and reflects the light, enhancing the depth and the intimate atmosphere of the scene. A wall-mounted street lamp, discreetly integrated into the composition, reinforces the quiet, almost timeless character of the place.
The gesture is free and expressive, privileging evocation over precise description. This pictorial writing gives the work a dimension that is at once sensitive and poetic, characteristic of Émile Lammers' work, whose urban scenes convey a particular attention to atmosphere and to light.
The work is presented in a moulded wooden frame, harmoniously highlighting the composition.
Born in Belgium in 1914, Émile Lammers fits into the Belgian pictorial tradition of the 20th century, with a body of work mainly devoted to painting. His work is distinguished by a sensitive gaze on landscapes, urban scenes, and the atmospheres of daily life, often marked by a search for balance between structure and emotion.
Regularly active on the art market, Émile Lammers has had his works offered at public auctions 231 times, mostly in the Painting category. The first recorded adjudication dates back to 1992, with Winter Landscape, presented at Palais des Beaux-Arts – Servarts. More recently, the work Alley was offered in 2025, confirming the ongoing interest in his work.
This year, the artist's best performances have been achieved mainly in Belgium, underscoring the strong local base and the lasting recognition of their work on their home territory. The available market data are based on the analysis of 231 adjudications, providing a reliable and coherent assessment of their market value.
Today, Émile Lammers's works appeal to both collectors who pay close attention to Belgian painting of the 20th century and to enthusiasts seeking sincere compositions, guided by a sober and timeless atmosphere.
