Artist biography
Emilio Álvarez Díaz (Buenos Aires, June 21, 1879 – Madrid, July 5, 1952) was a 20th-century Spanish-Argentine painter. He emigrated with his family to Madrid as a child, where he was a disciple of Emilio Ordóñez. His work was heavily influenced by Goya, Lucas Velázquez, and Fortuny. He practiced painting and sculpture, excelling in themes such as majismo, still lifes, landscapes, and Orientalist scenes, particularly with motifs of Moors on horseback. He was characterized by a style reminiscent of the Goyesque school and traditional Spanish motifs. Due to his shy nature, he rarely participated in exhibitions or competitions. Some of his works are unsigned or have altered signatures to increase their value.
His work is valued and appears in collections and auctions, including typical Goya-esque scenes and Orientalist landscapes. Emilio Álvarez Díaz holds significant importance in Spanish and Argentine art of the first half of the 20th century.
