Giorgio de Chirico, Lo sgombero, 1970, a lithograph in eight colours on paper, artist's proof (AP) signed at bottom right, edition limited, dimensions 70 by 53 cm, about 1 kg, Italy, metaphysical art style, dated 1970–1980, condition good, sold by owner or dealer.
Description from the seller
A very fine artist's proof with a superb rendering of the colors. Lo sgombero (1970) belongs to Giorgio de Chirico's late period, marked by a deliberate return to the metaphysical motifs of his youth.
By the 1960s–1970s, Chirico, then over 80, produced numerous lithographs, engravings and paintings revisiting his iconic themes from the 1910s: deserted Italian squares, oversized architectures, articulated mannequins and incongruous objects. Unlike his 'modern' phase of the 1920s–1950s influenced by classicism, he asserts this 'regression' as an authentic reaffirmation.
The palette—intense sky blue, bright ochre-yellow floor, white/gray walls punctuated by vivid green and red touches—produces a theatrical effect where the light seems unreal, projecting elongated shadows that are disproportionately long, heightening the space’s illusory depth. This chromatic harmony, applied in eight lithographic layers, evokes a dreamlike nostalgia while maintaining precise graphic sharpness.
