Extended biography

Emilio Scanavino, Italian painter and sculptor, was born in Genoa (Italy) on 28 February 1922 in Milan (Italy) and died on 28 November 1986.

After a figurative beginning, Emilio Scanavino's painting soon took on post-cubist characteristics, with the forms progressively becoming more stylised until they dissolved completely in the early 1950s.

In 1954, on his canvases begins to surface what will later become his distinctive mark, namely the stylized knot that will characterize all his later production. The works of the 1950s are considered among his finest, as in them one can see the genesis of that painterly transposition of interiority with all its torments, which makes his art unmistakable.

In his paintings later in the 1970s, the 'knot' is perfectly delineated and recognizable, rendered in unsettling forms, sometimes menacing and stained with red blood. Although Scanavino is an artist difficult to place within a specific current, he can be considered an informal abstract painter, close to Abstract Expressionism and the artistic research of Hans Hartung and Georges Mathieu.
