Description from the seller
Portrait of a gentleman – Oil on canvas, second half of the 19th century
Dimensions of the painting: approximately 43.5 × 53 cm.
Total dimensions with frame: approx. 72.5 × 62 cm.
Technique: oil on canvas
Provenance: private collection
Condition of preservation: professionally restored (full technical report attached)
Refined 19th-century male portrait depicting a distinguished bourgeois gentleman, with thin glasses and a dark formal suit adorned with a white jabot. The work, typical of bourgeois portraiture of the second half of the 19th century, stands out for its painterly quality and skillful use of chiaroscuro, which adds psychological depth to the face and creates an intense stage presence.
The painting has undergone conservation-restoration carried out by a professional, a restoration professor in Florence, and is accompanied by the related signed technical report.
The contemporary gilded wooden frame with refined shell decorations at the corners completes the piece; it shows some signs of age and small losses in the gilding, as visible in the photographs, which do not compromise its charm and authenticity.
On the back, there is a historic transportation label from the English company Pickfords, with a handwritten note ('Williams – 93'), indicating a previous move or storage in the United Kingdom. This serves as an interesting trace of movement or provenance.
A work of strong character and historical charm, ready to be displayed and ideal for collectors of vintage paintings and portrait enthusiasts.
Photos are an integral part of the description. Guaranteed careful packaging entrusted to industry professionals.
