Kohiki-Style Ash-Glazed Yunomi Tea Cups, Large & Small Pair with Signed Wooden Box – Contemporary Japanese Pottery / Wabi-Sabi Aesthetic
⸻
Description
This is a matching set of two Japanese yunomi tea cups (large and small), featuring soft Kohiki-inspired tones and a natural ash-glaze gradation. The set comes with its original signed wooden storage box (tomobako) and represents contemporary Japanese studio pottery suitable for both daily use and display.
The gentle transition from pale grey-green glaze to warm earthy clay tones is a natural result of firing, giving each cup its own unique character. The rounded cylindrical forms and subtly uneven rims are intentional, reflecting the Japanese wabi-sabi aesthetic—an appreciation of imperfection, natural variation, and quiet beauty.
Inside, the glaze flows and pools softly, creating a calm and comfortable drinking experience. On the exterior, the smooth glazed surface reveals warmth from the clay beneath, balancing rustic charm with refined simplicity.
A potter’s seal can be found near the foot, confirming these are handmade works by a ceramic artist. The wooden box bears calligraphy, indicating the cups were created as a paired set of yunomi. Each cup shows slight individual differences in size and expression, allowing them to be enjoyed as a complementary large-and-small pair, similar to traditional “couple” tea cups.
