Description from the seller
Dating: around 1900–1920
Dimensions: (15 x 11 cm without frame)
Signature: signed (see figure)
Frame: an original gilded stucco frame, circa 1900, with a mat.
Expressive and finely executed head study of a young girl in profile, facing to the right. The work impresses with a warm, harmonious color palette and a lively, painterly brushwork. The sensitive modeling of the neck, shoulder, and hair area testifies to great drawing assurance and artistic experience.
The representation is typical of Italian late-impressionist and realist artistic creation around the turn of the century. Such oil studies were often used as standalone works or as preparatory pieces, and were particularly valued for their immediacy and intimacy.
Romolo Bernardi worked as a painter of figure and head studies. His works are characterized by a calm, confident painting style, subtle color nuances, and a strong focus on the expression and character of the portrayed subject.
The image comes from a private collection in Italy. On the back, with an old collector's label and a handwritten note.
Good condition for its age.
Age- and material-typical signs of wear present.
No serious damage detectable.
The original frame shows age-related wear.
Overall, an authentic, signed oil study by an Italian artist dating from around 1900. It is especially attractive due to the intimate format, the high-quality execution, and the original frame.
