This painting presents two intimately related scenes that revolve around childhood and its natural bond with the sea. In both compositions, a child is seen from behind, standing on the shore, facing a stretch of water that opens calm and enveloping. The child’s figure becomes the narrative axis of the scene, not through an explicit gesture, but through posture and silent contemplation, which convey a sense of pause and discovery.
In the two panels, the sea occupies a predominant place, unfolding in broad swaths of blues that softly overlap, creating depth and movement without violence. The horizon line is serene, almost suspended, reinforcing an atmosphere of calm that envelops the viewer. The water is not shown as turbulent, but welcoming, as if inviting the child to approach slowly, respecting the pace of his curiosity.
The figure of the child, dressed in simple, summery clothes, provides a warm contrast against the freshness of the marine environment. In his hand he holds a small cube of intense color, a humble object that gains symbolic value by representing play, exploration, and imagination. The slightly tilted posture of the body suggests attention and anticipation, as if he were about to embark on a silent adventure or simply observe what the water hides.
The coastal setting is treated in an open and luminous way, with a beach that blends into the sea without hard boundaries. The sand is hinted with light, soft tones, reinforcing the sense of lightness and temporality, like those moments from childhood that seem eternal but pass quickly. There are no superfluous elements: everything leads to a simple, direct reading, where space and the figure dialogue in balance.
Both paintings, although independent, complement each other as two moments of the same experience. The repetition of the motif does not create monotony, but rather a sense of continuity, as if they were consecutive memories of the same day beside the sea. The absence of visible faces reinforces the universal character of the scene, allowing any spectator to identify with that child and with that moment suspended in time.
Taken together, the two paintings build a poetic evocation of childhood, calm, and discovery, where the sea acts as the setting and symbol of the unknown, and the boy represents the purity of the gaze and the emotion of simple things.
