Biographie : Claude Gaveau (1940-2022) is a French painter, widely recognized for his vibrant works that blend landscapes, still lifes, and abstract compositions. Born in Neuilly-sur-Seine, he trained at the Angers School of Fine Arts before continuing his studies at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Gaveau, influenced by the heritage of post-impressionism and Fauvism, distinguishes himself with his bold use of color, reminiscent of artists such as Henri Matisse and Albert Marquet.
His paintings reveal a geometric structure that sometimes recalls the influence of Georges Braque and Juan Gris's Cubism, while preserving a distinctive sensibility, marked by a soft and poetic atmosphere. Gaveau explores classical themes—the sea, the mountains, the flowers—but always with a lyrical abstraction that suggests a personal universe, though mastered by the rigor of his composition.
Through his works, he demonstrates an ability to balance color and form, in the vein of the School of Paris painters, such as Nicolas de Staël. His palette, often rich in shades of blue, ochre, and red, also evokes the influence of masters like Paul Cézanne, with whom he shares a sense of construction. Claude Gaveau thus combines tradition and modernity, and his work is part of the continuity of the great colorists of modern art, while asserting a singularity that is his own.
