Description from the seller

Item description

An elegant Japanese bamboo flower basket (hanakago) attributed to Hōzan (宝山), executed in refined ajiro-ami (woven bamboo technique). The work presents a tall, square-sectioned form with a gracefully arched handle, emphasizing verticality and compositional balance—qualities highly esteemed in Japanese floral art and tea culture.

Of particular note is the surface of the bamboo, which has developed a nuanced greenish patina over time. This coloration results from natural aging, oxidation, and traditional material treatment, and is highly valued from both scholarly and collecting perspectives as an indicator of authenticity and age. Rather than deterioration, this patina enriches the visual depth of the basket and embodies the aesthetic dialogue between material, time, and environment.

The precise weaving, reinforced corner construction, and carefully finished rim demonstrate a high level of craftsmanship consistent with serious Japanese bamboo art. Such baskets were historically used as flower vessels for ikebana and the tea ceremony, where subdued tones and natural textures harmonize with seasonal flowers and interior space.

Please note that the inner bamboo or metal water container (otoshi), which is sometimes inserted inside flower baskets, is not included with this piece. The basket itself is offered as an independent work of bamboo craftsmanship.

Combining functional beauty with a quiet, dignified presence, this basket exemplifies the principles of wabi-sabi, expressing refined restraint, material honesty, and the subtle beauty of age. It stands as a sophisticated example of Japanese bamboo art, suitable for both academic collectors and refined interior display.
