He was a student of Léon Germain Pelouse (1838-1891), a painter of the Barbizon School, under whose influence he was shaped but who did not belong to it.

To circumvent his exclusive contract with his dealer, he used pseudonyms, including Léon DUPUY. The signature used on this painting.
