Description from the seller
Leonardo Roda (Racconigi, 1878 – Turin, 1933)
mountain landscape
Oil on canvas, 50 x 70 cm
With frame, 72 x 92 cm
Signed lower left: L. Roda
The painting Mountain Landscape belongs to the rich oeuvre of Leonardo Roda, a Piedmontese artist born in Racconigi in 1878 and active between Turin, Liguria, and the Aosta Valley until his death in 1933. A painter deeply rooted in the Alpine environment, Roda devoted much of his research to the depiction of the Aosta Valley peaks, so much so that he was known as "the painter of the Matterhorn." Although largely self-taught, he honed his sensibility in Marco Calderini's studio in Turin, assimilating from the master his attention to atmospheric light and his ability to convey the poetry of vast natural spaces. The work, signed in the lower right corner, seems to immortalize a stretch of the Valtournenche mountain pastures, a place the artist frequented extensively during his summer stays. Here, Roda found an inexhaustible repertoire of scenery: luminous valleys, snow-capped peaks, paths traveled by shepherds, and small mountain villages. The canvas presents a typical layout of his mature style: in the foreground, a path leads the eye toward a small cluster of stone houses and a small church with a bell tower. On the right, a herd of grazing cattle introduces the activities of daily life, while a peasant woman with a child in her arms, portrayed from behind, adds a narrative touch that recalls the humble and concrete dimension of mountain life. The mountain massif dominates the entire scene like a solemn presence. The snow, rendered through iridescent reflections of blue, purple, and orange, testifies to the painter's skill in capturing the luminous vibrations of high altitude. The bright, airy hues, applied with rapid, textured brushstrokes, translate a sincere naturalism onto the canvas, free from idealization yet capable of evoking the stillness of spring. This attention to atmospheric values places Roda within the realist tradition, enriched nevertheless by a modern sensibility in the treatment of color. In his work, the landscape is never simply a backdrop; it becomes the true protagonist of the scene, while figures and animals reinforce its realism. Roda, a passionate mountaineer and botanist, spent a long time observing the mountains, transforming every seasonal variation into a pictorial motif. It is no coincidence that he chose to spend long periods at Giomein, just above Cervinia, where mountain life offered constant opportunities for life-like study. This Mountain Landscape thus embodies the distinctive traits of Roda's poetics: faithfulness to nature, the emotional rendering of Alpine landscapes, and the desire to convey the harmony between man and environment through scenes of rural life. Leonardo Roda's ability to combine observation and lyricism contributed to the artist's success at exhibitions in Milan, Turin, Genoa, and Florence, cementing a reputation that continues to accompany his work today and testifies to his value in early twentieth-century Italian landscape painting.
