A.R. Penck (actually Ralf Winkler, born 1939 in Dresden, died 2017 in Zurich) was a significant German painter, graphic artist, and sculptor of the post-war period. As a co-founder of the so-called 'Neue Wilden,' he developed a distinctive visual language composed of archaic-looking signs, symbols, and pictograms that evoke prehistoric cave paintings or modern graffiti. His works are characterized by political, social, and existential themes—often encrypted but always expressive.
In addition to the visual arts, Penck was also a passionate jazz musician. The freedom and improvisation of jazz reflected in his art—through gestural style, spontaneous expression, and rhythmic repetition of forms. Jazz was for him not just music but an attitude: rebellious, unpredictable, lively. He played drums himself and occasionally performed under pseudonyms like 'Mike Hammer.'
In Pencks's work, art and music merge into a shared language – a visual and sonic improvisation about being human, freedom, and the power of expression.
