Aldo Borgonzoni (1913-2004) - Cardinal (Cardinale)

Aldo Borgonzoni, despite his secular background, was deeply struck by the innovations introduced by the Second Vatican Council, which began in 1961. It was precisely in the wake of this significant event that the artist began his Cardinals series, which would remain a constant theme throughout the next ten years of his career.

In this work, we can see the roots of Borgonzoni’s art: an Expressionism with vivid colors, reinterpreted in light of the developments of the Fronte Nuovo delle Arti movement, to which the painter adhered.

The artist, a member of the Accademia Clementina and the Cardinal Lercaro Foundation, received the Nettuno d’Oro award from the City of Bologna in 1983 and, in 1994, was bestowed the title of Grand Officer of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic by the President of Italy. He took part in several Venice Biennales and Rome Quadriennales, as well as in numerous group and solo exhibitions in Italy and abroad. His works are held in public museums and in private collections both in Italy and internationally.
