Cardboard: 42 x 23 cm
La Savoiarda is a 19th-century painting made with oil on cardboard, depicting a young itinerant woman, a figure typical of nineteenth-century northern Italy. The protagonist, captured in a simple and composed pose, carries with her a hurdy-gurdy, a popular instrument tied to the musical tradition of the Alpine regions, in particular Savoy.
The work stands out for its intimate and realist tone, attentive to the subject's dignity rather than picturesque anecdote. The essential landscape and the measured use of color focus attention on the figure, returning an image of silent humanity and daily life. La Savoiarda thus fits into the nineteenth-century sensibility toward the themes of the people and humble life, with a compassionate and respectful gaze.
