Franco Costa (Rome, 1934 – Rome, 2015) was an Italian painter known for his colorful works in the Arte Vita style, often linked to major sailing events. His art and personality showed the same traits: vibrant colors and shapes combined in a harmony that was as open and simple as it was evocative. Costa studied music and violin at the Accademia di Santa Cecillia in Rome, French and literature in Geneva and architecture in Zurich and the L'Ecole des Arts et Metiers in Paris. He was friends with Nicolas de Stael, Picasso and Matisse, among others. Costa's work remains popular to this day in the United States as well as in Sweden, Germany and the Netherlands.
