Nazzareno Cugurra (Verona, January 15, 1924 – Rome, March 6, 2012) was an Italian painter and artist.
Chiarist painter, a friend of Guttuso, he was born in Verona in 1924 and supported himself during his studies by giving private painting lessons in Naples. Among his pupils was Romano Mussolini, who in the immediate postwar period was confined for political reasons to the island of Ischia.
In 1949, at the age of 25, he graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples, in the premises of which he held his first exhibitions, attracting the interest of the trade press.
The early years of his youth, uncertain and adventurous, were marked by painful episodes that shaped the themes of his early painting, prompting him to depict a world of pariahs and the dispossessed.
In 1951-52 he was among the 861 participants in the sixth edition of the National Art Quadriennale in Rome, held at the Palazzo delle Esposizioni on Via Nazionale; he then participated in the next two editions (1955-56 and 1959-60).
In 1956 he participated in the 28th Venice Biennale.
Attracted by the Roman environment rich in artistic and cultural stimuli, he decides to move there.
In 1954 he was the winner of the 1st edition of the painting prize 'City of Pizzo', while in 1956 he had the opportunity to exhibit at the 'Galleria La Loggia' in Brescia in a group exhibition with Mino Maccari and Antonio Vangelli.
