1 x Bottle of 1925 Marqués de Riscal Gran Reserva from La Rioja - Spain.
Legendary vintage in La Rioja and a real turnpoint for the region as the american rootstocks really started to show in the vines after the disastrous phylloxera in the XIX Century.
At the official ceremony commemorating the centenary of the Rioja D.O.Ca., held at the Bodegas de los Herederos del Marqués de Riscal, an extraordinary event took place: the disgorging of 15 bottles of Marqués de Riscal 1925, in homage to a century of tradition and excellence of the designation of origin. These bottles had been kept in the Old Wine Cellar, one of the world's greatest viticultural treasures. His Majesty King Felipe VI, who presided over the official ceremony, visited this unique space located in the original Marqués de Riscal winery, built in 1860.
Purchased from a highly reputable retired restaurateur in the north of Spain, this is pure history. A must try for any collector who wishes to understand a classic Rioja fully matured. Fill level is excellent for its age. No leeks, cork seems fine and the capsule is holding great for its age. The wine coulour (see pictures) is perfect.
About 1925 Marques de Riscal Gran Reserva
--------------------------------------------
55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Tempranillo and a small percentage of white varieties, mainly Viura, as at that time some white grape varieties were planted at the tops of the vineyards for family consumption, which were also harvested for the winery at harvest time. Aged in old 225-liter American oak barrels for between 5 and 7 years. Continuous racking every 3 months for the first three years to avoid having to filter the wine before bottling. Traditional clarification with fresh egg whites. Bottled by hand from the barrel
Spectacular color for a wine 100+ years old. Medium-high intensity ruby-brown, orange and reddish reflections, brick-red rim with clear differences.
Open bottles for a couple of hours before serving. Aromas of great concentration and fine reduction. Initially, upon pouring and before swirling, notes of leather wineskins, staves, dried mushrooms, and incense emerge. As the glass is swirled and the aromas inhale, they transform: sage, Egyptian tea, ripe sloes, cherry in liqueur, burnt oak, flint, meat, smoke, bay leaf, clove, and spices. The aromas continue to evolve, giving way to notes of sweet black and red fruit, caramelized sugar, and a curious hint of extra-aged Modena balsamic vinegar,of exceptional quality and intensity.
On the palate, it is breathtaking in its freshness and a breadth more typical of a grand wine. A wine in its prime, with a powerful acidity, vibrant, vigorous, with a structure more fibrous than muscular, which has been woven and refined over years in the bottle. Everything has fallen into place, integrated, and perfectly balanced. It continues to come alive as it breathes, revealing more ripe fruit with a hint of citrus, spices, slight bitterness, toast, and vanilla. Yet another example of the immense stature of the old Riscales.
Shipping is from/to EU MAINLAND ONLY (no islands) in certified protective cardbox.
