Description
This refined woodblock print, “Pose (II) – White,” is a work by the renowned Japanese printmaker Tadashige Nishida. A serenely seated white cat is depicted against a background suggestive of gold leaf, creating an elegant composition that calls to mind a traditional Japanese folding screen (byōbu). The cat’s amber eyes and distinctive expression convey a quiet, almost spiritual presence that leaves a deep impression on the viewer. Along the lower part of the image, a branch with green leaves and blue morning glories introduces a sophisticated contrast of color and texture.
The work was created using traditional Japanese multi-color woodblock printing techniques, and Nishida’s meticulous method of building up layers of color and texture can be appreciated throughout the print. It is number 20 from a limited edition of 120, with the artist’s handwritten signature and red seal at the lower right. Presented in an elegant wooden frame, it is ready to be displayed and enjoyed immediately. For collectors of contemporary Japanese prints or cat-themed art, this is a particularly appealing piece.
About the Artist – Tadashige Nishida 西田忠重 (b. 1942)
Printmaker Tadashige Nishida, born on Amami Ōshima in Kagoshima Prefecture, studied the fundamentals of design and form at the Department of Industrial Design of Chiba University Junior College. He then studied Western-style painting under Nobunari Mochizuki and Japanese-style painting under Hato Iwasaki. In his youth he also traveled to Spain and the United States, where he pursued postgraduate-level studies. While exhibiting in shows such as the Nika Exhibition, the Andapanda Exhibition, and the Nihon Hyōgenha Exhibition, he built his career through a diverse range of media, including oil painting, Nihonga, and printmaking. This solid training in painting, combined with his overseas experience, laid the foundation for the distinctive sense of form and color that characterizes the woodblock prints for which he is best known today.
His style is marked by clean contour lines and simplified forms, and he is known for compositions that feel carefully staged, almost like theatrical sets, even though his motifs are familiar and intimate—cats, human figures, palm trees, Mount Fuji, and other everyday subjects. The cats and people he depicts, with their gentle expressions, are humorous and approachable, yet they also carry a quiet, poetic atmosphere. Through the interplay of clear color planes and soft gradations, he creates a world that feels both spiritually resonant and warmly inviting. While grounded in traditional Japanese multi-color woodblock printing techniques, his handling of color, cultivated in Japanese-style painting, and his modern sense of composition, shaped in part by his time abroad, blend together naturally. This fusion is a key element of what makes his work so distinctive.
Rather than being positioned as a “grand master” at the level of major museum retrospectives, Nishida is appreciated as a highly accomplished artist within the field of contemporary Japanese creative woodblock printmaking, combining a high degree of finish suitable for interior display with a strong sense of originality. His series centered on cats and human figures enjoy solid recognition among collectors both in Japan and overseas. Within the history of postwar Japanese printmaking, Tadashige Nishida can be seen as an artist who has quietly yet steadily gained support by using traditional woodblock techniques as a base while elevating everyday, approachable motifs into a contemporary visual language.
