Large colour lithograph by the Belgian artist Pjeroo Roobjee (pseudonym of Dirk De Vilder) titled 'Man on the Cross'. Signed and dated ('88) in pencil by the artist as well as numbered 115/500. Professionally framed behind plexiglass.
Pjeroo Roobjee (born 1945) is a versatile visual and literary artist: he works as a painter, draftsman, engraver, author, actor, raconteur, theater-maker, entertainer and singer. He studied painting and engraving at the Royal Academy in Ghent and at the preparatory department of the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam.
Both his visual and his literary work have been awarded several times. He was, among others, repeatedly recognized in the Prix de la Jeune Peinture, he received the Louis Paul Boon Prize (1994) and the Ark Prize for Freedom of Speech (1998), and he was the laureate of the City of Ghent Culture Prize (2004). He represented Belgium at major art events such as the São Paulo Biennale (1971) and the Venice Biennale (1980).
His work is included in major collections and museums, including the Collections of the Belgian State, the Collection of the Flemish Community, the Parliament of the Flemish Community, Dexia, the PMMK (Kunstmuseum aan Zee) in Ostend, the Museum of Ixelles, the Museum of Modern Art in Brussels, SMAK Ghent, and even hangs in MoMA in New York.
