Artist's Biography
Pau Roig y Estradé (Vilanova i la Geltrú, January 24, 1914 – October 24, 1994) was a Catalan painter.
Orphaned from a very young age, he was taken in by an aunt. As a child, he already showed a certain penchant for drawing. He attended the public school of maestro Vicente Sorni, and together with two other classmates they produced a magazine: Fortaleza. It contained texts and drawings. The only artistic training Roig received was between 1929 and 1934 at the School of Arts and Crafts in Vilanova, where Alexandre de Cabanyes offered evening classes. In addition, besides working in the family business whenever he could, he used his spare time at Joaquín Mir’s home, accompanying the artist while he painted.
Mobilized in 1937 to join the front, there he encountered other landscapes that he took advantage of to draw along the way: Valencia, Ciudad Real ...
Once he returned from the war, he began associating with Enric C. Ricart, who helped him solidify his aesthetic ideas.
She exhibited several times in Barcelona (1941, 1943, 1944), in Vilanova i la Geltrú (the town where much of her work is located: the Hall of Commissions of the Town Hall, at the Víctor Balaguer Library–Museum, among others), in Madrid (1952 she was selected for and took part in the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in Madrid), etc. Her work is characterized by a constant dedication and deepening in landscape, often limited to Vilanova i la Geltrú and its landscape, as well as to the surrounding region.
