EXTRA INFO ARTIST:
Ward Lernout (3 May 1931 – 21 December 2019) was a Flemish painter, born in Geluwe, West Flanders.
He received his artistic training at the Municipal Academy of Fine Arts in Menen, where he studied with the painters F. Wallecan and E. Van Overberghe. After a lengthy stay in Africa, he settled in Tervuren in 1964. Until 1990 he worked in advertising and the press, but from 1970 onward he exhibited his work annually in various art galleries.
Lernout's oeuvre is characterized by a deep connection to the Flemish painting tradition, combined with a modern approach. His use of bold lines and a rich, varied color palette expressed the simple, rural life in his paintings. He succeeded in bridging the gap between the past and the present, capturing the beauty of a changing nature.
His work has been exhibited in numerous national and international galleries and museums, including the Royal Museum for Central Africa in Tervuren, the Centre d'Art du Paradou in France, and the Casa de Cultura in Pozuelo de Alarcón, Madrid. Additionally, in 2001 he was selected for the exhibition "Im Zeichen der Ebene und des Himmels", organized by the European artist colonies in Nuremberg.
