EXTRA INFO ARTIST:
Jef Van Grieken, born in 1950 in Herenthout, Belgium, is a versatile artist who works in painting, drawing, pastel drawings, and graphic arts. He pursued his studies at the Academy of Antwerp (1967–1969), specialized in etching at the Academy of Mechelen (1969–1973), and studied printmaking at the Higher Institute in Antwerp (1973–1976).
Van Grieken undertook several study trips to, among others, Yugoslavia (1976), Brazil (1983), the Far East (1988), Patagonia and Mexico (1988/1989), and Colombia and Venezuela (1992). These trips influenced his artistic development and themes.
In his early work he focused on themes such as decay and transience, with images of withered branches, castle ruins and abandoned industrial structures. After his trip to Brazil in 1983, his style evolved toward a more realistic approach, while he retained the atmospheric and sometimes magical mood in his work.
Van Grieken received multiple awards, including the First Prize for Young Belgian Engraving in 1978 and the First Prize for Drawing Art Belgica 150 in 1979. His work has been exhibited internationally, among others at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. (1986), the Fine Arts Museum in Taipei (2000), and the Curaçao Museum in Willemstad (2002).
Besides his artistic practice, Van Grieken was also active as a lecturer at the Academy of Leuven (1973–1976) and the Academy of Mechelen (from 1976). His body of work is characterized by a subversive character and an almost magical aura, in which he contemplatively explores the relationship between people and their environment.
