Jim Bird (1937 – 2010) was a British painter born in Bloxwich, United Kingdom, initially trained in graphic design at the Walsall School of Art and at the Wolverhampton College of Art. In 1962 he left a successful career in design to devote himself entirely to painting, and he moved to Spain, where he developed much of his work and established his studio.
His work evolved from influences of op art toward a lyrical and gestural abstraction characterized by subtle color gradations, textures, and a free pictorial language, often referred to by himself as “landscapes of the mind.” His painting was influenced by movements such as material informalism (informalismo matérico) and abstract expressionism, and throughout his career he maintained a personal approach based on gesture, fluidity, and the exploration of color and matter.
Bird lived significant periods in Mallorca and New York, where he formed friendships with figures of contemporary abstract art such as Robert Motherwell, Kenneth Noland, and Helen Frankenthaler, and exhibited his work in galleries and international fairs in Europe and the United States.
Their work is part of public and private collections in several countries, and their legacy is valued for its contribution to contemporary abstract painting.
