Description from the seller
Main features of the work
• Marino Marini (1901–1980) • Portrait • Drawing on photographic paper • 32.8 × 22.9 cm, 55 × 40 cm with frame • Signed and archived at the Marino Marini Foundation, Pistoia • Official certificate issued by the Marino Marini Foundation, Pistoia (no. 84/1991) • Provenance: Italian private collection.
The sole work belonging to the Poetic Realism movement of twentieth-century Italy.
Unique work created between 1948 and 1952 approximately, authenticated by the Marino Marini Foundation of Pistoia, with an official certificate dated April 11, 1991, archive number 84. The work is included in the artist's autograph works archive and is accompanied by original documentation.
The sheet presents a refined male portrait traced with essential black lines and red underlines, revealing Marino Marini's extraordinary graphic sensibility. The sober, controlled rendering, at times lightly applied on photographic paper, returns a thoughtful and measured face, in which the stroke becomes pure psychological and poetic expression.
The paper shows slight waviness due to aging, consistent with its age and in overall good condition.
Marino Marini's graphic work represents a fundamental component of his plastic and human research, balanced between introspection and formal synthesis. In this Portrait, the essential language of the poetic Realism of 20th‑century Italy surfaces, in which the sign becomes the measure of the soul, as in the works of contemporaries such as Giacomo Manzù or Arturo Martini.
Marino Marini (Pistoia, 1901 – Viareggio, 1980) was among the most important sculptors and draftsmen of Italian the 20th century. A student at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, he achieved international fame for his equestrian figures and portraits with strong human and symbolic value. He exhibited at the Venice Biennale, the Rome Quadriennale, and in numerous international museums, solidifying his presence in the art market with works now highly sought after by collectors and institutions.
The buyer will receive the artwork in carefully packed and sturdy packaging. Very fast shipping. Free pickup available in Monza/Milan.
