Description from the seller
Pol Mara (1920–1998)
Untitled, 1974
Color screen printing on paper.
69.5 × 49.8 cm
Edition: IV/XXV (4/25)
Signed bottom-right in pencil: Pol Mara
With Roman numbering under the signature.
From the folder: 10 Artists, 1974
This monumental screen print from 1974 belongs to Mara's highly sought-after early graphic period. The composition combines an expressive red figurative motif with a graphic, almost object-like element on the left in black and silver-gray, in which the word “CLASH” is subtly integrated. The strong contrast and the tense, dynamic composition are exemplary of Mara’s oeuvre from the 1970s, in which sensuality, alienation, and social undertones converge.
The work is part of the prestigious folder '10 Artists' (1974), a portfolio edition that brought together several leading artists. The edition comprised only 25 copies; this is number IV/XXV — a particularly small edition that significantly enhances its rarity and collecting value.
With its generous size (almost 70 cm wide), the print has a pronounced presence. The combination of large format, early date (1974), limited edition, and provenance from a portfolio edition makes this an attractive collectible within the market for Belgian post-war art.
Pol Mara represented Belgium at the Venice Biennale (1966), and his work is housed in major museum collections. Prints from his early period, especially in small editions, are gaining increasing interest among collectors.
Condition: In good condition with fresh colors and intact margins (see photos). Back side blank.
A rare and representative graphic publication by an internationally renowned Belgian artist.
