Description from the seller
Roger Somville (1923–2014)
Untitled (1974)
Lithography on paper
69.5 × 49.8 cm
Signed and dated bottom right.
Numbered IV/XXV (4/25)
From the folder “10 Artists”, 1974
Original lithograph by the Belgian artist Roger Somville, published in 1974 within the framework of the prestigious folder “10 Kunstenaars”. This portfolio brought together a selection of leading Belgian artists and is regarded as a representative document of its era within the printmaking of the 1970s.
Description
The composition shows an expressive portrait, built up from bold, nervous lines and a dynamic black-and-white contrast. Somville’s characteristic, socially engaged figuration is clearly evident in the direct and intrusive gaze of the depicted figure. The free, almost sketch-like linework reinforces the work’s spontaneous and monumental character.
The print has been signed and dated in pencil “Somville 1974” and numbered IV/XXV, which indicates a limited edition of only 25 copies. This is number 4 from the edition.
Collector's value:
Works from the portfolio “10 Artists” (1974) are sought after due to their limited edition and their historical coherence as a portfolio publication. Individual sheets from this series are collected separately, but also enjoy extra interest when they can be traced back to the complete portfolio. The combination of:
limited edition (only 25 copies), clear signature and dating, and its place within a curated portfolio edition from 1974, makes this work particularly interesting for collectors of Belgian postwar art and graphics.
Leaf in good overall condition, with light signs of aging consistent with its age (see photos).
